Frequently Asked Questions ...

What do you call the Clergy?

Different Episcopal clergy seem to prefer different titles. Some will want to be referred to as Mr. or Mrs. Smith, and others will prefer Father Smith or use their first name. If one wishes to be grammatically correct, you should know that "reverend" is an adjective describing a person. So, "Rev Smtih" is never correct, even though is has worked its way into common usage. "The Rev. Mr. Smith" is correct, as is "The Rev. Fr. Smith" and "The Rev. John Smith."

Can I take Communion?

The Holy Eucharist (Communion) in the Episcopal Church is open to all baptized people, regardless of denominational background or home Church. To receive communion at St. John's, come forward as directed by the ushers, and fill the communion rail from the right to the left. When the priest comes, place your right palm over your left palm, upon which the priest will place the communion host, a consecrated wafer of unleavened bread. As the chalicist comes with the common cup and consecrated wine, you may:

(1) sip directly from the chalice by guiding the cup to your lips;

(2) dip your host in the chalice (Intinction)

(3) not drink from the cup at all (please signal so by placing your arms across your body with your hands touches each opposite shoulder).

These sacraments are, in holy ways, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, taken for our spiritual nourishment.

How can I find my way through the service?

The Episcopal Church uses a prayer book, the Book of Common Prayer, for worship services. The Book of Common Prayer contains Holy Communion, and all other services that we use. For song, we use a hymnal. The Scripture readings for the services are on an insert contained in the bulletin distributed as you enter. The order of service is always outlined in the bulletin, and the Rector will announce page numbers throughout the service.

I'd like to get involved in a Church activity. How do I do this?

Volunteering is easy, fun and rewarding. There are numerous ways to get involved in areas of interest to you. These include:

(1) signing-up on sheets posted in the Parish Hall for specific activities and functions;

(2) listening to and responding to announcements made during the services;

(3) call the person listed in the Sunday bulletin;

(4) call the Church office at (610) 459-2994, and/or talk with another parishioner.
